Barira is a 5th class municipality in the province of Shariff Kabunsuan.

According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 18,296 people in 3,326 households.

Barira is politically subdivided into 14 barangays.

It has a land area of 38,000 hectares, 10,000 hectares of commercial forest, the envy of loggers and concessionaires: 15,000 hectares of agricultural land planted with rice, corn, coffee, coconuts and other agricultural crops; the rest constituted the lowland sandy portion in the northern part of the Municipality.

Characterized by a more or less even distribution of rainfall throughout the year, the coldest months in the province are December and January. The warm season is from March to June.
